If you're like me, you drive around a lot with your bike strapped to the roof of your car. So the question often arises; When visiting Washington, where can I park my car while I go biking (and expect it to be there when I get back)!

For example, parking garages are a pain since you don't quite fit with the bike on the roof. Street parking can be a problem if you need to feed the meter, but don't know how long you will be gone. Well, here are some good tips for "biker friendly" parking areas that allow easy access to downtown.

Suggested Distant Parking Locations

These maps identify several suggested parking areas. The red lines show the various biking trails leading into the downtown area. The 3 and 5 mile radius circles provide a rough estimate of distance from the US Capitol. If you are more "gung-ho", then you can try some of the distant parking areas.

Parking Location	Distance to US Capitol	Description
The Mall & Potomac Park	1-2 Miles	The obvious parking choice is right downtown near all the action. However, you will need to get there early!
Roosevelt Island	3 Miles	Easy access to area bike paths, but beware the time restrictions during workdays.
National Airport	3 Miles	There is a great FREE parking lot at the north end of the runway. And thanks to the wonderful Mount Vernon Trail, you have easy access to downtown.
Water Street	4 Miles	Located on the Georgetown Waterfront under the Whitehurst Freeway, Water street provides easy access to several of the area trails.
Fletcher's Boathouse	5 Miles	Great out-of-the-way parking area located right on the C&O Towpath and Capital Crescent Trail.
Clara Barton Parkway	6-10 Miles	Some of the easiest places to park if you are coming from the out lying areas. Plus, it offers a great bike ride into town.
Olde Town Alexandria	7-9 Miles	Olde Town is located just south of National Airport. A popular local hangout with many shops, restaurants, and pubs.
Belle Haven Marina	11 Miles	Very easy access from the Beltway (I-95), and a great bike ride into town along the Potomac River.
Carderock Recreation Area	15 Miles	Very easy access from the Beltway (I-495), and a very nice traffic free ride into town.
